Moving During Coronavirus: How to Stay Safe When Using Local Movers

Local movers are still open for business during the Covid-19 pandemic, so you don’t have to cancel your moving plans. However, you will need to take some additional precautions when planning your move to a new home or apartment. Take a look at our best practices for prioritizing your safety and the safety of those around you:
Be Up Front About Symptoms
If you, someone in your household, or someone you’ve been in contact with have been experiencing any symptoms related to the coronavirus, please let us know before we arrive. We may still be able to work with you, but this will allow us to take extra precautions to protect our workers. And as a return favor, we promise not to send any local movers to your home that have been experiencing symptoms.
Don’t Use Free or Recycled Boxes Now is not a good time to start grabbing up free boxes from supermarkets or stores, especially if they’ve recently been shipped through the mail. Studies show the coronavirus can live on cardboard for as long as 24 hours, so stick with the items you already have at home. If you don’t have enough, we have new materials ready to purchase to facilitate your move.
Social Distancing Rules Still Apply
When you’re moving, there’s a lot of in and out of the home and close contact with other people. We do our best to stick with the social distancing rules recommended by the local government. This is why it’s a good idea to leave all the heavy lifting to us while we’re there. If you need to move additional items outside of what you’ve hired us for, we ask that you move those items before we arrive or wait until we’ve finished our part so we can avoid as much contact as possible.
Your Local Movers are Taking Extra Precautions
We’re just as concerned about Covid-19 as you are, and we’re doing everything we can to create clean, safe moving conditions so you don’t have to cancel your move. We’ve given our team members additional training on sanitization, and we’re fully loaded with gloves, masks, and hand soap and sanitizer to maintain clean working conditions.
We’re careful not to touch door knobs, light switches, or other items in home unless absolutely necessary. To further avoid this, you can help us by turning on all lights and propping open doors prior to our arrival. First Thing After Moving: Give Your New Space a Deep Clean Once all of your things are in your new home or apartment, we recommend giving every corner, dish, piece of furniture, and other items a good cleaning. While we’ve taken every precaution we can, we also believe you can’t be too careful in a crisis situation.
The good news about using local movers during Covid-19 is that you have more time to focus on fixing up your new place and getting settled. Enjoy leaving all the hard work to Montgomery Moving Co. and take your time turning your new space into a place you’ll call home.

Hiring Moving Services? Here’s How to Make Your Move More Eco-Friendly

Moving isn’t just a stressful process for people and pets — it can also put a strain on the environment. Even though most moving boxes are recyclable (especially the ones you get through your hired moving services), there's still a fair amount of trash, waste, and carbon produced in the process.
As you’re in the process of moving into a new place and onto a new adventure, be mindful of how you can make the switch a little less impactful on the environment with the following tips:
Use Containers You Already Have
Suitcases, laundry baskets, plastic bins, duffel bags, and even garbage cans all make great moving vessels to avoid buying boxes. Fill up these items before choosing to buy additional items.
Once you find out you’re moving, start saving boxes from items shipped to your home. This not only saves you money, but also repurposes boxes that have already been used instead of relying on new materials.
Use Creative Packing Materials
Your most delicate items will need special attention when it’s time to pack, but you might be surprised at how much you already have on hand that will protect them during the move. For example, you might wrap your glassware in old newspapers or dish towels instead of having to buy bubble wrap.
This is a major game-changer in eco-friendly moving, as most packing materials are not as easily recycled as cardboard boxes.
Some items you might use for packing materials include:
* Towels* Sheets* Newspapers* Old magazines* Clothes* Pillowcases* Packing materials you received in a recent shipment
Donate Items You No Longer Want
Moving is a time to declutter your home and avoid taking old junk into your new space. But before you toss it all into a landfill, consider donating items that still work and are in decent condition. Someone else may be able to benefit from your donation, plus you reduce your own waste in the process.
Work with local shops and charities to see which items they might be able to take off your hands.
Pack Your Kitchen Last
It’s tempting to pack the kitchen first, as this is where you likely have the most stuff. But while you might not need every plate and utensil before you move, it’s a good idea to leave out the most important kitchen items until moving day.
This is because most people pack up their kitchen and rely on using paper plates and plastic forks. It’s convenient, but it also means producing more waste than necessary. Like any other room in the house, pack what you don’t need on a daily basis and leave the rest for moving day.
Take Advantage of Moving Services
A little forethought and planning can go a long way in reducing your carbon footprint when moving. If you have more boxes than what you can load into your own car, it might be wise to hire moving services to reduce the number of back and forth trips. Not only will you save on fuel and carbon output, but you can also leave all the heavy lifting to the professionals.

How to Move with a Pet

How to Move with a Pet
Moving to a new home or apartment can be an intricate experience, but if you have a pet, you’ll have a whole new set of challenges to conquer. If you’ve hired residential movers, you should know that transporting your pet will be your responsibility, which is actually a good thing since your pets look to you for comfort during stressful times (like relocating!).
Here’s how you can take some of the pressure off your pet — and yourself — on moving day:
Prepare an Overnight Bag for Your Pet
There are some things you won’t want to put on a moving truck, such as your pet’s food, their carrier, leash, food and water bowls, and toys. These are items your pet will likely need before you’re able to start unpacking, so make your pet their own overnight bag to keep these items within arm’s reach.
Ideally, you’ll have a few day’s worth of supplies on hand so you don’t have to stop in the middle of packing to make a store run. You’ll also want to include their vet records, rabies tag, and other important documents so they don’t become lost in the shuffle.
Find a Safe Space for Your Pet During the Move
Your pets should stay as far away from the action as possible during the move. Even professional residential movers may find it a safety hazard to have your pet running back and forth as they pack up your home.
Many pet owners choose to board their dogs and cats at a professional kennel before the moving truck arrives. If this isn’t an option, consider confining them to a bedroom or fenced-in backyard until it’s time to leave.

Move Your Pet Last
It’s a good idea to move your house before you move your pet. At the very least, have your furniture arranged and your pet’s familiar items placed where they can find them. Your pet can adapt faster when they enter a new home with items they recognise versus an empty home filled with strange people and chaos.
Once you have a room set up, introduce your pet to their new home so they can start getting comfortable in their environment.
Snap a Photo of Your Pet
No matter how much your pet loves you, the stress and chaos of moving can cause them to act erratically. If they fly the coop before they can become acclimated to their new surroundings, you’ll have to go out looking for them. Having a recent photo of your pet can help you on your rescue mission — neighbors can keep an eye out for them and send them home if found.
Update Their Info with the Vet
Last but not least, once you get settled you’ll want to reach out to your vet to update your pet’s new address. You won’t want to miss important appointment reminders and updates from your vet that will keep your pet happy and healthy.
If you’ve moved outside of your local area, make it a priority to find a new vet and get your pet’s records transferred. You should also update their microchip information in case your pet were to become lost in their new neighbourhood.

Are Moving Services Tax Deductible in Canada?

Keyword: moving services
Moving services can be a tax deductible expense in some cases, but the benefit doesn’t apply to everyone. But if it does apply to you, you’ll want to know about it!
Every tax deduction means a little more money in your own pocket. If you’ve recently moved or are planning to move in the near future, it pays to see if you might be eligible for a tax deduction. And if so, you’ll
need to know exactly what does and does not count as a deduction.
See if you can take advantage of the moving expense tax deduction to lighten your out-of-pocket costs.
Can I Claim Moving Services on My Taxes?
Anyone who relocates for a job, whether it’s to start a business in a new location or you got a new position working for someone else, is eligible to deduct moving expenses. To take advantage of the deduction, you must be a Canada resident and your new location must be at least 40 km closer to your place of work than your previous location. Self-employment opportunities count as well.
This includes individuals who move within Canada, move from Canada to a work location outside the country, or move from outside the country into Canada for work. In addition, full-time students may take advantage of the deduction as part of any scholarships, grants, or bursaries that are taxed as income.
Types of Deductible Moving Expenses
The term ‘moving expenses’ is broad, encompassing a variety of costs associated with moving.
Typically, you can include the following items in your tax deduction
calculation:
- Temporary storage of items
- Travel expenses to the new location
- Accommodations and meals for your family during the move
- Temporary living expenses up to 15 days ( including meals)
- Any fees incurred in cancelling your old lease
- Up to $5000 in costs to maintain your old residence after you vacate it
- Costs of buying or selling a property (e.g. real estate fees, legal fees, mortgage penalties, etc.)
- Incidental fees (e.g. changing driver’s license, utility hookups or disconnections, etc.)
Just as important, there are certain things you cannot deduct from your taxes. Improvements to your home to make it sell faster, a loss from the sale of your home, travel expenses resulting from job hunting or house shopping, and mail-forwarding costs are not eligible for the moving tax deduction benefit. You can see a complete list of non-deductible expenses here.
However, if you receive reimbursement from an employer for your moving services, you may not include that amount in your deduction. You may only claim the amount you pay out of pocket OR you must include the reimbursement amount as part of your income.
How Do I Claim Moving Expenses on My Taxes?
If you qualify for tax benefits on your moving expenses, you’ll need to use Form T1-M to calculate your deductions. You do not need to attach the form to your tax filing, nor must you submit any receipts or documentation to support your claim. However, it’s always a good idea to hang onto your receipts just in case the Canada Revenue Agency requests proof.
